This officially kicks off the film photographs I took over the past week in the Black Hills and in the Rockies of Colorado. I’d kill for a nice digital camera (fingers crossed that the Nikon D600 is real and that all D700 owners sell their rigs for cheap to pick up the new toy so I can buy cheap on the flooded used market!), but sometimes film, especially film shot on a plastic lens, gets results that digital could only dream about. I was struck by how many photographers, undoubtedly all amateurs like myself, were out shooting in the mountains. I wonder, if 1,000,000 people take a picture in the same spot, will there be 1,000,000 identical results? Obviously not, but with digital the chances are much higher. The dynamic range of the negative I started with would not be possible on one shot using digital. Even with HDR, the result would somehow look digital, processed. The reason I’m still out shooting with film (and my iPhone) is because it’s not always a different perspective that yields a unique photograph of a popular subject; sometimes it’s the medium. On that day, my medium was of the medium format film, plastic camera variety. Long live the Holga!

I have really enjoyed the results of my first few rolls of color film shot on a medium format camera. I don’t expect to abandon black and white anytime soon (since processing costs are less than a dollar compared to $10+ per roll of color), but I hope to shoot color occasionally for a change of pace. This is from a few weeks ago. I walked through the Minnesota State Fair grounds, which was pretty much deserted. Quite the difference from those two weeks during the summer, where millions of people meander through. This is a shot of the Giant Slide, a childhood favorite! I wonder where the burlap sacks are, maybe I can get in a few lonely, cold runs….

![Roll-a-week 6/52 on Flickr.Six weeks into this challenge, I’m getting bored wandering around downtown looking for interesting buildings/bridges/landmarks. I think I have more than enough of those shots for now. My mini-challenge-within-a-challenge will now be to go out and take more photographs of people (yes, real, live people!). Unlike buildings, people don’t stay in one place and they are definitely more interesting (at least they can be). Keep on following for the results of this mini-experiment! And thanks for checking out my 2012 photo challenge!

Roll-a-week 5/52 on Flickr.

This roll is from a very enjoyable Saturday afternoon with my dad, uncle, and grandmother in greater Minnesota (near Owatonna). We trudged through the snow on some public management land that used to be my uncle’s childhood stomping ground. One note about Diafine—-I think I got a few subtle streaks due to uneven development. I’m thinking of trying a pre soak and a more vigorous agitation period. We’ll see what happens!

Ah, four weeks into the roll-a-week challenge. I think this is my first roll where all of the frames are properly exposed! Progress! I was having a minor crisis of confidence in my metering ability, after one roll was very over-exposed and the next was very under-exposed. I think my problem was over-reliance on my meter, which caused me in one case to expose for the brightest highlights in a very shadowy shot (a snow river). In addition to that faux pas, I also tried putting my 52mm red filter over the lens hood and surprise, surprise, guess what marred the corner in most of my shots?! No matter, I’m still new at this film thing, but I guess the good news is that I have 48 weeks left to practice. It was really cold when I took these shots—-the coldest its been all winter in Minnesota. I got a few keepers (I think), but at least they all turned out!
