This gentleman and I made eye contact as he crossed the street. It was the kind of contact that has the potential to be awkward (well, what kind of contact doesn’t?!) but I quickly motioned his way and asked if I could take his photograph. He readily obliged, wished me luck, and went on his way. Easy peasy.

You’ve probably seen this gentleman or others like him busking along Nicollet Mall on any given day. Now, to me, this would be a difficult way to make a living and in any regard, not a fun way to spend a Saturday afternoon (then again, I spent some of my Saturday afternoon asking to take picture of strangers—-now who’s the weird person?!). This gentleman was really getting into his jam, though, and you can see it shine through in his eyes. Since he has his recorder in his mouth, he needs to use his eyes to smile, yet there’s a hint of sadness there, as I’ve seen common in most of the individuals I’ve encountered thus far for this project.

I fixed the light leaks (they were slight, but annoyingly noticeable) on my new 1000s yesterday with some wool yarn and craft foam from the fabric store. The foam from the 1970s was disintegrating and letting in a slight amount of light, which made uniform objects like the sky bright on either end. Annoying, right? Anyway, I took a roll this afternoon and it seems as though the problem is fixed! I did manage to over-expose/develop some of the shots, especially ones with strong backlighting, where I purposely over-exposed the metering in order to get the shadows. May have over-done it a bit. Oh well! Rachel and I headed over to the Minneapolis Institute of Art this afternoon and she was nice enough to stand and smile for me—-what a lucky guy I am! I’m hoping to start taking street portraits soon, but need to get this metering thing figured out first…
